FAQs
Is it possible to operate the Centrifuge 5702 in the cooling room?Yes, the Centrifuge 5702 may be operated in the cooling room. When moving the centrifuge from the cooling room to a normal lab room, the centrifuge must either run warm for half an hour in the cooling room or warm up for at least 3 hours in the lab room without being connected to the power supply. This is to avoid damage caused by condensation.
Which material is the rotor chamber made of?The rotor chamber is made of high-quality steel and is therefore extremely resistant.
How can the centrifuge be opened in the case of power failure?First, pull the plug and wait until the rotor comes to a standstill (can take up to 5 minutes!). The emergency lid release is located on the bottom of the device: a small, white plastic button is located in the base plate in front of the front right device foot. Remove this and pull the cord vertically downwards. The lid will open. Please ensure that the cord retracts completely into the housing when you later close the lid. Press the plastic button back into the base plate.
What is the minimum selectable speed and in which increments can it be increased? The minimum selectable speed is 100 rpm. It can be increased in increments of 100. The g-forces displayed are only approximations. The exact values can be calculated for the different adapters. Please bear in mind that a setting of 100 rpm equals a relative centrifugal force of 1.5 x g. The 100 x g displayed is only reached at a rotational speed of 800 rpm.
Is it possible that the time is counted down only after reaching the selected speed?Yes, this is possible. Pressing the START/STOP key for longer than 2 s with the centrifuge lid open initiates the switch to the "at set rpm" mode, as symbolized by a pictogram. To exit the "at set rpm" mode again, press the START/STOP key again for longer than 2 s with the centrifuge lid open, until the pictogram appears.
Is it possible to switch off the signal tone?Yes. If the OPEN key is pressed for longer than 2 s while the centrifuge lid is open, either “b on“ (signal tone on) or “b of“ (signal tone off) will appear. With the Centrifuges 5702 R / 5702 RH, a pictogram on the display indicates that the signal tone is switched on.
Is it also possible to adjust the parameters during centrifugation?Adjustments to the time, rotational speed and temperature (5702 R / 5702 RH only) can be made while the centrifuge is running. To do this, press the SHORT key until the display begins to flash. You can now set the new centrifugation parameters using the TIME and SPEED dials and the TEMP keys. The new centrifugation parameters are taken over after 5 s.
Can the values set for routine applications be secured against unintentional adjustment?Yes, with the Centrifuges 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH it is possible to fix the desired settings. To do this, press the SHORT and the OPEN keys simultaneously for at least 5 s while the centrifuge lid is open. In this way, the dial adjustment is deactivated and "lo on" will appear on the display of the Centrifuge 5702. On the display of the Centrifuges 5702 R / 5702 RH, the fixed setting of the centrifugation parameters will be indicated by an additional pictogram. The set values can now no longer be adjusted, irrespective of whether the centrifuge is running or not. In order to reactivate the dial adjustment, press the SHORT and OPEN keys again for 5 s. "lo of" will appear on the display of the Centrifuge 5702, and the pictogram on the display of the Centrifuges 5702 R / 5702 RH will change. The parameters can now be adjusted again.
How can the set parameters be saved using the program keys? This is only possible when the centrifuge is not running. First, set the desired program parameters using the TIME and SPEED dials and the TEMP arrow keys. The "at set rpm" function and the slower acceleration and braking ramps can also be saved in the fixed programs, if required. Keep the PROG 1 or PROG 2 key pressed for 2 s until the program key stops flashing and glows continuously. A short signal tone will sound. The program has been saved.
Can the ShortSpin key be programmed? No, the ShortSpin key cannot be programmed.
What are the maximum values for the acceleration and deceleration times? The acceleration time to the maximum rotational speed is less than 25 s, the deceleration time from the maximum rotational speed is approx. 25 s.
Is it possible to change the acceleration and braking ramps for specific applications?Yes, when working with Ficoll density gradients or other sensitive applications (e.g. certain blood and urea centrifugations), slower acceleration and braking ramps can be set for the Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH. This allows the centrifuge to accelerate and decelerate smoothly and ensures optimum centrifugation results. Press the SHORT key for more than 5 s while the centrifuge lid is open. The writing on the display changes from "br on" (brake on) to "br OF" (brake off), or "soft" is displayed (5702 R, 5702 RH). The slower acceleration and braking ramps are now activated. If the SHORT key is pressed for less than 5 s while the centrifuge lid is open, the current state is displayed.
Are any rotors for 1.5/ 2.0 mL micro test tubes or microplates available for Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH?The centrifuge has a fixed-angle rotor for 1.5/ 2.0 mL micro test tubes. With the help of adapters, tubes with a volume of 0.2 - 0.6 mL can also be used. A rotor for microplates, however, is not available.
What is the maximum number of 15 mL conical tubes that can be centrifuged in the fixed-angle rotor F-35-30-17 or in the swing-bucket rotor A-4-38?A maximum of 20 x 15 mL conical tubes can be centrifuged in the fixed-angle rotor F-35-30-17. The maximum capacity of the swing-bucket rotor A-4-38 is 8 x 15 mL conical tubes. Aerosol-tight centrifugation is only possible with 4 x 15 mL conical tubes in the swing-bucket rotor.
Is aerosol-tight centrifugation possible in the Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH?Yes, there are aerosol-tight caps available for the round buckets of the rotor A-4-38. These caps are certified according to Porton Down. All round bucket adapters, except for the adapter 5702 723.002, can be used for aerosol-tight centrifugation. Instead of the adapter 5702 723.002 for two 15 ml Falcon tubes each, the adapter 5702 732.001 for one 15 ml Falcon tube is available for aerosol-tight centrifugation.
How can the rotors and adapters be cleaned?Rotors, buckets, sleeves and adapters should be cleaned on a monthly basis with a neutral detergent in order to prevent material changes due to residues of the material being centrifuged. Please do not use sodium hypochlorite or chlorous or oxidizing disinfectants and detergents under any circumstances. Disinfection with glutaraldehyde solution is possible. We recommend Cidex® activated glutaraldehyde solution (®: Johnson & Johnson). Plastic adapters and rubber inlays are dishwasher safe.
Are the rotors and adapters autoclavable? All rotors, buckets, adapters, sleeves and caps are autoclavable for 20 min. at 121°C. The rotors A-4-38 and F-35-30-17 as well as the affiliated buckets and sleeves can even be autoclaved for 2 hrs. at 140°C and 3 bar.
How can the relative centrifugal force (rcf) for the various adapters be exactly determined? The rcf (g-force) shown on the display is standardized for 15 ml Falcon tubes (rotor: A-4-38). The rcf to be attained at maximum speed for the various adapters are listed in the operating manual. In order to determine a specific rcf for a specific adapter, use the following formula according to DIN 58970: rcf = 1.118 · 10-5 · n2 · rmax n: rotational speed in rpm rmax: max. centrifugation radius in cm
Does the Centrifuge 5702 R/ RH has an energy saving function?Yes, the ECO shut-off automatically switchs off the compressor after 8 hours of non-use. The device has a stand-by button.
